Overview

For travellers drawn to Rajasthan’s wildlife, living craft and exceptional stays.

Most Rajasthan journeys are a loop of the same palaces, photographed from the same angles. This one moves in a line from the tiger forests of the east to the dunes of the far west, then back through leopard country and the marble hills of the south, ending on a lake. Six regions, two wildlife stays, one temple of carved white marble, and a farm in the desert that serves one of the most talked-about meals in the state. Every day is built around access rather than attractions: private guides, early entry, and hosts who know the place personally.

Pace: varied, with early wildlife starts and several longer transfers. Like all of our journeys it is private throughout, with your own car and chauffeur, private guides in each place and someone to call from the first day to the last.

Itinerary

12 nights, stop by stop.

A designed route, not a fixed one. Each stop can be lengthened, shortened or swapped before we confirm your journey.

  1. A Bengal tiger resting at the edge of a Rajasthan forest, its orange coat and white chest against dark green foliage

    Days 1–2 · Ranthambore

    Tiger Country

Day 1: Arrival in Tiger Country

Subject to airport permissions and service availability, you are met at the aircraft door in Delhi and assisted through immigration. Continue to Ranthambore by chauffeured car (allow about six hours, depending on traffic), or by rail with private arrangements confirmed in advance. Check in to Suján Sher Bagh, a tented camp at the edge of the national park. We plan this transfer around your flight; a Delhi pre-night at The Imperial or The Oberoi may be recommended for a late arrival and is quoted separately.

Tea on the lawn at dusk, then dinner by lantern light with the camp's naturalist, who will explain how the planned safari sessions are planned.

Day 2: A Day in the Forest

Two game drives in an open jeep, one at dawn and one in the afternoon, with a private vehicle and naturalist in the park zones best suited to the season. Ranthambore is one of the few places in India where tigers are regularly seen in daylight, often against a backdrop of crumbling stone: the 10th-century Ranthambore Fort crowns the hill above the park, and the lakeside ruins and old hunting pavilions give the forest an extraordinary, film-set quality.

Sightings are never guaranteed, and a good naturalist will tell you so. What they can promise is a day spent reading pugmarks, listening for alarm calls from sambar and langur, and learning why this forest has become one of the most closely watched tiger landscapes in the world. In the break between drives, a long lunch and a quiet hour at the camp.

    Moments

    • Three planned Ranthambore game drives, subject to permits
    • Private vehicle and naturalist arrangements
    • Long lunches and lantern-lit camp evenings

  2. The pink east facade of the Hawa Mahal in Jaipur

    Days 3–4 · Jaipur

    The Pink City, Seen Quietly

Day 3: The Road to Jaipur

A final dawn drive in the park, then a leisurely drive (about 3.5 hours) to Jaipur. Check in to Rajmahal Palace RAAS, a restored royal palace and one of the most intimate heritage hotels in the city, with a small number of rooms and the feel of a private residence rather than a hotel. Spend the late afternoon on the terrace with tea, then a private dinner in the palace gardens.

Day 4: Forts, Printing and a Royal Kitchen

Morning at Amber Fort, reach early to beat the crowds, with a guide who can explain the water systems and the lived history of the Kachwaha court. From there, a private visit to a block-printing workshop in Sanganer or Bagru, where you carve a wooden block and stamp your own length of cloth under the eye of a master printer.

Afternoon at the City Palace with a private tour, with access to selected royal sections subject to permission and confirmation, and Jantar Mantar, the 18th-century observatory of monumental astronomical instruments. For the evening, a private cooking class in a Rajasthani haveli, hosted by a member of the family, covering old royal-kitchen recipes: you cook, then you sit down and eat what you have made.

    Moments

    • Amber Fort early within opening hours
    • Block printing with a master printer
    • City Palace, Jantar Mantar and a haveli cooking class

  3. Sunlit carved sandstone balconies and lattice windows inside Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur

    Day 5 · Jodhpur

    Beneath Mehrangarh

    Day 5: The Blue City

A short flight from Jaipur to Jodhpur (about an hour, where schedules allow) or a private drive of around 5.5 hours. Check in to RAAS Jodhpur or, if you prefer something grander, Umaid Bhawan Palace.

In the afternoon, Mehrangarh Fort, among the largest and best-preserved forts in India, rises above the city on a 400-foot rock. Go in with a private guide and spend time in the museum's palanquins, howdahs and painted chambers. Descend on foot through the old blue-washed Brahmpuri lanes, and finish at Jaswant Thada, the white marble cenotaph, as the light softens. Dinner overlooking the fort, floodlit against the night sky.

  4. Golden sandstone bastions of Jaisalmer Fort beneath a blue, cloud-streaked sky

    Days 6–7 · Jaisalmer

    The Golden Desert

Day 6: Into the Thar Desert

A scenic drive west of about five hours across the Thar Desert. Arrive at SUJÁN The Serai, a private desert camp of 21 tented suites on an estate roughly 45 kilometres outside Jaisalmer, styled after the royal caravan camps of old Rajputana. The afternoon is for the pool, with a private plunge pool available in selected suite categories, a long lunch, and a first walk into the dunes. As the sun drops, a sundowner on a private dune, followed by a candlelit dinner and a performance by Manganiyar musicians, hereditary folk singers of the Thar.

Day 7: The Living Fort of Jaisalmer

Morning in Jaisalmer Fort, one of the few forts in India still lived in, its sandstone lanes holding shops, temples and family homes. A private guide leads you through the Jain temples and the carved facades of Patwon Ki Haveli. In the afternoon, a visit to Kuldhara, the abandoned village whose story is told differently by every guide, and a late-afternoon walk among the golden cenotaphs of Bada Bagh. Return to the camp for a final desert dinner under the stars.

    Moments

    • A desert camp and private dune sundowner
    • Manganiyar music and dining under the stars
    • Jaisalmer Fort, Kuldhara and Bada Bagh

    Stay · 2 nights

  5. Sunlit carved sandstone balconies and lattice windows inside Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur

    Day 8 · Mharo Khet

    A Farm-to-Table Interlude

    Day 8: A Farm-to-Table Interlude

A morning drive back east (about five hours) toward Jodhpur, stopping at Mharo Khet, a 40-acre farm that has turned arid land into a working garden. The farm's signature dining experience, Life's Feast, is a multi-course, plant-forward tasting meal built from produce grown almost entirely on the farm itself, served in open-air spaces with traditional Rajasthani decor. Mharo Khet is also listed in the MICHELIN Guide’s hotel selection, and its team is largely made up of local women, which gives the visit a quiet sense of community beyond the plate.

Arrive in time for a guided walk through the fields before sitting down to the meal. Spend the night in private farm accommodation, with the cottage or villa category confirmed in your proposal, a rare chance to wake up in the middle of the land that fed you the night before.

    Moments

    • A guided walk through the farm
    • Life’s Feast: a plant-forward tasting meal
    • A night in private farm accommodation

  6. An Indian leopard resting on a granite outcrop in Jawai

    Days 9–10 · Jawai

    Leopards among Granite Hills

    Day 9: Leopard Country

Drive about three hours south to the Jawai region, a landscape of ancient granite hills, shallow lakes and herding communities, between Jodhpur and Udaipur. Check in to SUJÁN Jawai, a camp of ten tents nestled among rocks and dry riverbeds, where leopards live freely on open land outside any fenced park. After lunch, a first jeep drive with a naturalist tracker through the hills at golden hour.

Day 10: Granite Hills and Rabari Traditions

An early start for a dawn leopard drive, when the cats are most active. Later, a visit to a Rabari herding settlement, where the community's distinctive red turbans and centuries-old traditions of livestock keeping still shape the landscape. As the day closes, a private sundowner on a granite outcrop, followed by dinner at the camp. Leopard sightings here are frequent but, as ever in the wild, never promised.

    Moments

    • Two planned leopard drives with naturalist trackers
    • A Rabari community visit by prior arrangement
    • A sundowner among the granite hills

  7. A covered boat passing Udaipur City Palace in golden evening light

    Days 11–13 · Udaipur

    Marble and Water

    Day 11: Marble and Water

A late-morning start, then a short drive (about 1.5 hours) to Ranakpur, tucked in a forested valley in the Aravalli hills. The Ranakpur Jain Temple, dedicated to Adinath, is carved almost entirely from pale marble and is celebrated for its 1,444 pillars, no two alike, and for ceilings of astonishing intricacy that change colour with the light through the day. Plan to arrive after lunch, as non-Jain visitors are usually admitted in the afternoon (please confirm current timings), and dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered.

Continue (about two hours) to Udaipur. Check in to Taj Lake Palace, a white-marble palace floating on Lake Pichola, reached by private boat, with the Aravalli hills behind. Dinner in a lakeside setting, as the city lights come on across the water.

Day 12: A Day on Lake Pichola

Morning at the City Palace, with a private tour of the apartments, mirrored halls and courtyards, then a walk through the gardens of Sahelion Ki Bari, the "garden of the maidens." Early afternoon at leisure for a spa treatment or a swim.

At sunset, a private boat on Lake Pichola, passing the Jag Mandir island palace, followed by a farewell dinner. If you would like one more adventure, a morning hike in the Aravalli hills near Udaipur can replace the afternoon rest.

    Day 13: Departure

A slow breakfast on the water, then a private transfer to Udaipur airport for your onward flight.

    Moments

    • Ranakpur’s carved marble temple en route
    • Taj Lake Palace, reached by boat
    • Udaipur City Palace and sunset on Lake Pichola

Thirteen days, seven stays

Two nights in Ranthambore and Jaipur are followed by one in Jodhpur, two in Jaisalmer, one at Mharo Khet, two in Jawai and two in Udaipur. Ranakpur is visited en route to Udaipur. This is a varied journey with six changes between seven stays.

Plan the arrival around your flight

The first day connects Delhi with Ranthambore. A Delhi pre-night may be recommended, especially after a late arrival, and is additional to the twelve published nights. Airport assistance and any private rail arrangements require confirmation.

Give the road days room

Days five, six and eight involve longer transfers. Jaipur–Jodhpur may be flown where schedules allow; the Jaisalmer legs can be replaced by private charter on request. Transport alternatives and any extra nights are quoted separately.

Match the room to the experience

Private pools are specific room or suite categories. The Serai’s pool-suite category, Mharo Khet’s accommodation and private palace access are confirmed individually. The published price is an indicative starting point for the final proposed accommodation and service scope.

Before you travel

  • Best season: October to March. Ranthambore's national park is closed during the monsoon, and summer is extremely hot in all six regions.
  • Wildlife: Tiger and leopard sightings are never guaranteed. We plan for the most likely windows but cannot promise an encounter.
  • Long transfers: Days 5, 6 and 8 involve longer drives or flights. We build in private lunches and stops so travel feels like part of the experience; a private charter can replace the Jaisalmer legs on request, subject to availability.
  • Ranakpur temple: Visitor timings, dress rules and restrictions on leather items apply and can change. Confirm before travel.
  • Booking: Private palace access, artisan workshops, the cooking class and camp stays are small and sell out well ahead; confirm availability and pricing with each operator.

Questions

Before you enquire.

Is Jaisalmer included?

Yes. Two nights at SUJÁN The Serai allow a desert sundowner, Jaisalmer Fort, the Jain temples and havelis, Kuldhara and Bada Bagh. The route then returns toward Jodhpur for the Mharo Khet farm stay before continuing south to Jawai.

When should we travel?

October to March is the proposed window. Safari permits, park operating dates, camp openings and Ranakpur’s visitor hours are checked for your dates. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, and festive pricing is available on request.

Are tiger and leopard sightings guaranteed?

No. Three Ranthambore game drives and two Jawai leopard drives are planned in the described sequence, subject to permits, timing and local conditions. Naturalists and trackers guide the search; wildlife encounters are never guaranteed.

Are private rail carriages or charter flights included?

Private rail arrangements and charter flights are optional alternatives, confirmed and quoted separately. The Jaipur–Jodhpur leg can be driven or flown where schedules allow; your proposal confirms the chosen transport and its price.

Can the special access be guaranteed?

Royal residential access, private venues, artisan hosts, cooking experiences and special dining depend on permission and availability. Early visits remain within official opening hours, and every special arrangement is confirmed in your proposal.

Is this a fixed departure?

No. Every journey is private and travels on your dates, with your own car, chauffeur and guides. The route on this page is a designed starting point; the stays, pacing and experiences are refined around you before anything is confirmed.

What does the from-price cover?

It is an indicative starting point per person, based on two travellers sharing a room in the stays listed, in the proposed accommodation and room categories, excluding international flights. Your proposal is priced against your dates, room categories and final inclusions.

When is the best time to travel?

Choose dates around the route and the experiences that matter to you. Northern city sightseeing, Kerala’s hills and waterways, and central India’s safari parks have different weather and operating calendars. Tell us your preferred dates; we will discuss the tradeoffs and confirm activity availability before finalizing the journey.

Can the hotels be changed?

Yes. The stays listed are the ones we propose for this route, subject to availability when we design your journey. We suggest alternatives of similar character where a property is full, or where a different one would suit you better.

Are the journeys suitable for families?

They can be. Tell us the ages of everyone travelling and we will adjust the pace, rooming and experiences accordingly. Children's pricing depends on ages and room arrangements and is confirmed in the proposal.
