About Udaipur
Udaipur is built around Lake Pichola, with the City Palace along one shore and island palaces set into the water itself. It is the Rajasthan city built for slowing down: a private boat at dusk, the marble interiors of the City Palace, and, on the drive in from Jodhpur, the Jain temples of Ranakpur, among the finest carved marble interiors in India.
Best time to visit: September to March, with the lake at its fullest just after the monsoon; by contrast, a longer, dry summer can leave Lake Pichola visibly lower.
Worth arranging
- The City Palace and its lake views
- A private boat on Lake Pichola at dusk
- The Jain temples of Ranakpur, on the road in from Jodhpur
