Overview

For travellers drawn to belief, living rituals and places of stillness.

Some journeys are about places. This one is about belief. It follows a thread from the Sikh kitchens and Sufi shrines of Delhi, to the ghats of Varanasi where life and death meet on the Ganges, to the thousand-year-old temples of Khajuraho and the river-ringed ruins of Orchha, where Rama is still worshipped as a king. Each stop shows a different face of devotion, and each is paired with a stay that deepens the experience: a palace built on the riverbank, a restored hilltop palace above a forest lake, a heritage hotel looking out over royal cenotaphs. It is built for travelers who want depth over sightseeing: private guides who explain what you are seeing, time to sit and watch rather than rush, and access that turns the most crowded places in India into something quiet and personal.

Pace: reflective, with room for ritual and stillness. Like all of our journeys it is private throughout, with your own car and chauffeur, private guides in each place and someone to call from the first day to the last.

Itinerary

9 nights, stop by stop.

A designed route, not a fixed one. Each stop can be lengthened, shortened or swapped before we confirm your journey.

  1. Humayun’s Tomb in Delhi, red sandstone and white marble under a blue sky

    Days 1–2 · Delhi

    Sacred and Sufi Delhi

    Day 1: Arrival and Stillness

Subject to airport permissions and service availability, you are met at the aircraft door, assisted through immigration where airport permissions allow, and driven to The Oberoi New Delhi, where you stay in a Deluxe Room. Sleep, and let your body clock catch up. Nothing is scheduled except a short evening briefing with your travel specialist, who explains how the days ahead will unfold, what to wear, and how to behave at sacred sites.

Day 2: Sikh Kitchens and Sufi Shrines

Begin early at Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, the great Sikh temple, where a free meal, the langar, is served to thousands every day. Your guide explains the tradition and you may join the volunteers in the kitchen. Continue to Humayun's Tomb, the Mughal garden tomb that inspired the Taj Mahal, with a conservation specialist rather than a general guide.

In the late afternoon, visit the Nizamuddin Dargah, the shrine of a Sufi saint, where devotional qawwali music is sung in the evening, traditionally on Thursdays and Fridays. Dinner back at the hotel.

    Moments

    • Gurudwara Bangla Sahib and its langar tradition
    • Humayun’s Tomb with a conservation specialist
    • Qawwali at Nizamuddin when the schedule allows

    Stay · 2 nights

  2. Warm light on Varanasi’s riverfront palaces and ghats, with a wooden boat on the Ganges

    Days 3–4 · Varanasi

    The Ganges at Dawn

Day 3: A Palace on the Ghats

A flight of about an hour and a half from Delhi to Varanasi, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Check in to BrijRama Palace, a royal residence built around 1807 directly on the ghats, with the river flowing beneath its walls. After lunch, settle in and rest, because the days ahead start before dawn.

In the evening, watch the public Ganga aarti from a private boat, with your guide arranging a vantage point on the river. The fire ceremony, bells and lamps remain part of the city’s shared ritual; this is private viewing, rather than a private ceremony.

Day 4: Ritual, Silk and Sarnath

A pre-dawn start for a private boat ride on the Ganges, setting out before 6 a.m. as the first light touches the ghats. You glide past pilgrims bathing, priests preparing offerings and the old riverfront palaces, with your guide explaining each ghat and its rituals. At the cremation ghats, observe quietly from the boat and do not take photographs.

After a long breakfast at the hotel, explore the lanes of the old city on foot to see Kashi Vishwanath Temple and a workshop where Banarasi silk is hand-woven on traditional looms. In the afternoon, drive to Sarnath, about 12 kilometres away (roughly 30 minutes), where the Buddha gave his first teaching after enlightenment. In the evening, a private Hindustani classical music recital at the hotel.

    Moments

    • Private boat rides at dawn and for evening aarti
    • Banarasi silk weaving and Sarnath
    • A private Hindustani classical music recital

    Stay · 2 nights

    BrijRama Palace

  3. The carved sandstone tower and walls of Devi Jagadambi Temple at Khajuraho

    Days 5–6 · Khajuraho

    Temples of the Chandela Kings

Day 5: A Hilltop Palace Retreat

Travel onward from Varanasi to Khajuraho, with the flight routing and any connection confirmed against current schedules. Continue by private car to The Oberoi Rajgarh Palace, a restored hilltop palace with a freshwater lake, forest and gardens. The afternoon is for the pool overlooking the lake, or a spa treatment where arranged. In the evening, dinner at the hilltop restaurant.

    Day 6: Carved in Sandstone

A dawn visit to the Khajuraho temples, built by the Chandela kings between about 950 and 1050 AD and now a UNESCO World Heritage site. With a private guide, walk the Western Group, including the Kandariya Mahadeva Temple, then the quieter Eastern Group with its Jain temples. The sandstone carvings, covering the walls in tiers of gods, dancers, musicians and everyday life, are among the finest in the world, and the first light brings out detail that the midday glare hides. Return to the palace for a lakeside breakfast.

Spend the afternoon at leisure, or choose an optional safari in Panna National Park, a tiger reserve only a few kilometres from the palace, or a trip to the Ken Gharial Sanctuary and Raneh Gorge. Dinner under the stars with a campfire story.

    Moments

    • The Western and Eastern temple groups with a private guide
    • A palace retreat beside a forest lake
    • Optional Panna safari or Ken River excursion

    Stay · 2 nights

    The Oberoi Rajgarh Palace

  4. Warm light on the domes and towers of the royal cenotaphs at Orchha

    Days 7–8 · Orchha

Palaces, River and a Living Temple

Day 7: The Road to Bundelkhand

A scenic drive of about four hours west through the villages of Bundelkhand to Orchha, a small, sleepy town on the banks of the Betwa River, founded in the 16th century. Check in to Amar Mahal, a heritage hotel overlooking the river and the royal cenotaphs, with a farm-to-fork restaurant sourcing much of its produce from its own organic farm.

In the late afternoon, walk to the Orchha Fort complex, a cluster of palaces including the towering Jahangir Mahal, the ruined Raj Mahal and the garden palace of Rai Praveen Mahal. At sunset, visit Ram Raja Temple, where Rama is worshipped as a king and, uniquely, receives a daily guard of honour, then Chaturbhuj Temple. End at the cenotaphs along the Betwa, where the memorials of the Bundela rulers glow in the evening light.

Day 8: A Slow Day on the Betwa

A slow day. Rise early for a walk along the Betwa River at sunrise, with the cenotaphs mirrored in the water, then a river activity of your choice: a gentle rafting trip where river conditions and permissions allow, a birdwatching walk, or a cycle ride through the countryside. In the afternoon, a visit to a nearby village and the hotel's organic farm, followed by a cooking session with the chefs. The evening is free for a last aarti at Ram Raja Temple.

    Moments

    • Orchha Fort and its Bundela palaces
    • Ram Raja Temple and riverside cenotaphs
    • Village, farm and cooking encounters

    Stay · 2 nights

  5. Humayun’s Tomb in Delhi, red sandstone and white marble under a blue sky

    Days 9–10 · Delhi

    A Gentle Return

Day 9: By Train to Delhi

A short drive to Jhansi (about 30 minutes), where you board a first-class train to Delhi. This takes roughly five hours and is among the most comfortable rail journeys in India. A private transfer meets you in Delhi, and you check in to The Oberoi New Delhi for a farewell dinner.

    Day 10: Departure

A late breakfast, then a private transfer to the airport for your flight home.

    Moments

    • Private transfer to Jhansi station
    • First-class rail travel, subject to service and class availability
    • A final Delhi night before departure

    Stay · 1 night

Planning this journey

Planning this journey

For the service and design process, explore private India journeys. For accommodation choices and price considerations, see luxury travel in India.

Visiting sacred sites

  • Dress modestly at all religious sites, covering shoulders and knees, and wear shoes that are easy to remove.
  • Do not photograph the cremation ghats in Varanasi, and ask your guide before photographing worshippers.
  • Leather items and some food items may not be allowed inside certain temples. Your guide will advise.
  • Many sites require walking over uneven steps and ghats. Let us know in advance if mobility is a concern.

What to pack

  • Light cotton or linen clothing, plus a warm layer for cool mornings and evenings from November to February
  • A scarf or shawl for temples
  • Comfortable walking shoes and a pair of sandals for boats and temple visits
  • Sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses and insect repellent
  • A camera with a zoom lens for the river and the temple carvings

Before you travel

  • Best season: October to March, when the weather is dry and pleasant.
  • Winter fog: From December to January, fog can delay flights in Delhi and Varanasi. We build in buffer time and recommend avoiding tight connections.
  • Flights and trains: Flights from Delhi to Varanasi and from Varanasi to Khajuraho, and the train from Jhansi to Delhi, depend on current schedules. We confirm these when you book.
  • Orchha: It is a small town, so the hotels are heritage-style boutique properties rather than large luxury resorts.
  • Booking: The palaces and small hotels sell out well ahead, so reserve early for peak months.
  • Visa and permit requirements, transport schedules, opening days and individual travel-health advice are checked for your passport, dates and circumstances before confirmation.

Questions

Before you enquire.

Is this a fixed departure?

No. This is a private journey designed around your dates. Stays, room categories, transport and experiences are confirmed in your personal proposal.

Are all experiences guaranteed?

Specialist hosts, performances, private venues, park activities and airport assistance depend on availability, permissions and local conditions. Optional activities and spa treatments are priced separately unless explicitly included in your proposal.

What does the from-price cover?

It is an indicative starting point per person, based on two travellers sharing a room in the stays listed, in the proposed accommodation and room categories, excluding international flights. Your proposal is priced against your dates, room categories and final inclusions.

When is the best time to travel?

Choose dates around the route and the experiences that matter to you. Northern city sightseeing, Kerala’s hills and waterways, and central India’s safari parks have different weather and operating calendars. Tell us your preferred dates; we will discuss the tradeoffs and confirm activity availability before finalizing the journey.

Can the hotels be changed?

Yes. The stays listed are the ones we propose for this route, subject to availability when we design your journey. We suggest alternatives of similar character where a property is full, or where a different one would suit you better.

Are the journeys suitable for families?

They can be. Tell us the ages of everyone travelling and we will adjust the pace, rooming and experiences accordingly. Children's pricing depends on ages and room arrangements and is confirmed in the proposal.
