Overview

For travellers seeking the south’s temples, living crafts and heritage homes.

Tamil Nadu is the India that most visitors miss. It is the home of the Dravidian temple, the Chola bronze, Carnatic music and a cuisine of astonishing depth, and it still feels lived-in rather than staged. This journey follows the story of the south from the Pallava rock carvings of the coast, through the faded French elegance of Pondicherry, to the great Chola temples of Thanjavur, the teak-and-marble mansions of the Chettiar merchants, and the temple city of Madurai, where ritual has barely changed in centuries. It is made for travelers who already know the north and want something quieter and more layered: private guides who explain what you are seeing, stays in restored mansions and heritage hotels, hands-on time with weavers, tile-makers, bronze casters and cooks, and enough unhurried hours to simply sit in a temple courtyard and watch.

Pace: cultural and considered, with time for craft and ritual. Like all of our journeys it is private throughout, with your own car and chauffeur, private guides in each place and someone to call from the first day to the last.

  1. Kapaleeshwarar Temple in Mylapore seen across its blue temple tank in Chennai

    Days 1–2 · Chennai

    The South’s Classical Traditions

    Day 1: Arrival and Rest

You are met on arrival at Chennai airport, assisted through immigration where airport permissions allow, and driven to ITC Grand Chola, a Luxury Collection hotel whose granite columns, carvings and grand staircases draw on the architecture of the Chola dynasty, with a spa, pools and restaurants. Nothing is scheduled today. Rest, swim, and in the evening meet your travel specialist for a short briefing on the journey ahead, what to wear in temples, and how to read the rhythm of the days. Dinner at the hotel.

Day 2: Mylapore, Bronzes and Music

Begin early in Mylapore, the old heart of the city, with a walk through the lanes around the Kapaleeshwarar Temple, its towering, sculpted gopuram alive with devotees, flower sellers and priests. Stop at a family-run kitchen for a traditional South Indian breakfast of idli, dosa and filter coffee, with your guide explaining the dishes.

In the late morning, visit the Government Museum, home to a celebrated gallery of Chola bronzes, the sculptures that define south Indian art. This is the ideal preparation for the temples ahead. Lunch at leisure, then a rest. In the evening, a private Bharatanatyam or Carnatic music performance, the city's classical traditions at their source, arranged at a cultural institution such as Kalakshetra, followed by dinner.

    Rock-Cut Temples beside the Sea

Day 3: Pallava Stories in Stone

A drive of about two hours south along the coast, with a stop at DakshinaChitra, a living museum of south Indian crafts, houses and traditions. Check in to Taj Fisherman's Cove, a seaside resort set among the ruins of an old Dutch fort.

In the late afternoon, with a private guide, visit the UNESCO-listed monuments of Mahabalipuram, carved in the 7th and 8th centuries: the Shore Temple, glowing in the low light beside the waves, the monolithic Pancha Rathas, the vast carved relief known as Arjuna's Penance, and the balanced boulder called Krishna's Butter Ball. Watch sculptors at work in the small studios that line the streets, carrying on a tradition that has lasted more than a thousand years. Dinner on the beach.

    Two Cultures, One Town

    Day 4: The French Quarter

A scenic drive of about two and a half hours to Pondicherry, once the largest French colony in India. Check in to Palais de Mahé, a colonial-style hotel in the French quarter, a short walk from the seaside promenade, with an outdoor pool. After lunch, an unhurried afternoon, then a guided evening walk along the Promenade as the light fades, with its pastel villas, bakeries and cafes. Dinner at a leading French-Tamil restaurant.

Day 5: Heritage, Studios and Auroville

A morning heritage walk through the French quarter and the neighbouring Tamil quarter, passing mustard-coloured villas, the Place de la République and the Pondicherry Museum, so you can see how two cultures built one town. Visit the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, then local handloom weaving and handmade-paper studios, where you meet the artisans.

In the afternoon, drive the short distance to Auroville, the experimental township founded in 1968 around a spiritual ideal, and visit the Matrimandir viewing point, with visitor arrangements confirmed in advance. Days 6–7 · Thanjavur

    The Great Chola Temples

Day 6: Along the Temple Route

An early start for the drive to Thanjavur, about seven hours with stops. First, Chidambaram, where the Nataraja Temple is dedicated to Shiva as the cosmic dancer and is among the oldest temple complexes in the south (morning visit, before the midday closure). Then Gangaikonda Cholapuram, the capital the great king Rajendra Chola built to mark his victories, and a UNESCO-listed Chola temple. Lunch en route.

Arrive in Thanjavur and check in to Svatma, a heritage hotel with a spa and pool. Dinner at the hotel.

Day 7: Bronze and Sacred Architecture

Begin at dawn at the Brihadisvara Temple, built by Rajaraja Chola in the early 11th century, its 60-metre tower rising over a courtyard that is quietest in the first light of day. A UNESCO World Heritage site, this is among the supreme achievements of Indian architecture. Visit the Thanjavur Palace and Art Gallery, with its collection of Chola bronzes, and the Saraswathi Mahal Library.

In the afternoon, drive to Swamimalai to watch a family of bronze casters make idols using the lost-wax technique, a craft passed down for generations, and to Darasuram, where the Airavatesvara Temple, also UNESCO-listed, carries some of the finest carving of the Chola age. Return to the hotel for dinner.

    Days 8–9 · Chettinad

    Mansions, Tiles and Legendary Cuisine

Day 8: A Mansion in Chettinad

After a leisurely breakfast, drive about three hours to the Chettinad region, stopping at Narthamalai to see its ancient rock-cut temples. Arrive at Visalam, a Chettiar mansion built more than 70 years ago and carefully restored, with a pool, courtyards and rooms furnished with antiques. In the late afternoon, take a heritage walk through the village to see the great mansions, built by Chettiar merchants with Burma teak, Italian marble and Belgian glass. Dinner of Chettinad cuisine, among the most famous and fiery in India.

Day 9: Athangudi and the Chettiar Kitchen

A day at your own pace. Cycle or walk through the lanes of Athangudi to watch handmade tiles being made, each with its colourful patterns pressed and dried in the sun. Join the chef for a spice and cooking demonstration and try making murukku, the crisp local snack. Visit Kanadukathan and its palace, and browse the antique shops of Karaikudi, where carved doors, brass lamps and old furniture from the dismantled mansions are sold. A drive of about two hours to Madurai, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Check in to Heritage Madurai, a hotel set in gardens with pool villas and a restaurant, The Banyan. In the late afternoon, a guided visit to the Thirumalai Nayak Palace, then at dusk, the Meenakshi Amman Temple, its gopurams covered in thousands of painted figures. Your guide plans the visit around the evening puja, when the temple fills with lamps, music and devotion.

Day 11: Flowers and Evening Devotion

A pre-dawn start for the flower market, where jasmine and marigold are sold by the sack and the air smells of both. Return for breakfast, then visit the Gandhi Museum and spend the afternoon at leisure by the pool or in the spa. In the evening, return to Meenakshi Temple for the Palliyarai ceremony, a nightly ritual in which the idol of Shiva is carried in procession to the goddess's chamber to rest for the night.

Day 12: Fly to Chennai and Home

A late breakfast, then a private transfer to Madurai airport for your flight to Chennai (about an hour and a quarter), where an assistant meets you and helps with your onward connection home. Planning this journey

Planning this journey

For the service and design process, explore private India journeys. For accommodation choices and price considerations, see luxury travel in India.

Temple etiquette

  • Dress modestly at all temples, covering shoulders and knees, and wear shoes that are easy to remove. Leather items and mobile phones or cameras may be restricted inside some temples, and your guide will advise.
  • At some temples, parts of the inner sanctuary are open only to Hindus. Your guide will explain what you can see.
  • Be respectful during rituals, and ask before photographing worshippers.
  • Many temple floors are hot underfoot by midday, so we plan temple visits for early morning and evening.

What to pack

  • Light cotton or linen clothing, and a scarf or shawl for temples
  • Comfortable walking shoes and sandals that slip on and off easily
  • Thin socks for hot temple floors
  • Sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses and insect repellent
  • A light rain jacket, since coastal showers are possible
  • A camera with a zoom lens for carvings and street scenes

Before you travel

  • Best season: December to February is the most comfortable, with warm days and cool evenings. Coastal rain is possible from October to December. Mid-January brings Pongal, the harvest festival, a joyful time with colourful decorations at doorways across the state.
  • Drives: Some days involve drives of several hours. We build in stops, private lunches and rest breaks so the journey feels like part of the experience.
  • Temple timings: Many temples close in the middle of the day, so the schedule is built around early mornings and late afternoons.
  • Booking: The small heritage hotels sell out well ahead, so reserve early for peak months.
  • Visa and permit requirements, transport schedules, opening days and individual travel-health advice are checked for your passport, dates and circumstances before confirmation.

Questions

Before you enquire.

Is this a fixed departure?

No. This is a private journey designed around your dates. Stays, room categories, transport and experiences are confirmed in your personal proposal.

Are all experiences guaranteed?

Specialist hosts, performances, private venues, park activities and airport assistance depend on availability, permissions and local conditions. Optional activities and spa treatments are priced separately unless explicitly included in your proposal.

What does the from-price cover?

It is an indicative starting point per person, based on two travellers sharing a room in the stays listed, in the proposed accommodation and room categories, excluding international flights. Your proposal is priced against your dates, room categories and final inclusions.

When is the best time to travel?

Choose dates around the route and the experiences that matter to you. Northern city sightseeing, Kerala’s hills and waterways, and central India’s safari parks have different weather and operating calendars. Tell us your preferred dates; we will discuss the tradeoffs and confirm activity availability before finalizing the journey.

Can the hotels be changed?

Yes. The stays listed are the ones we propose for this route, subject to availability when we design your journey. We suggest alternatives of similar character where a property is full, or where a different one would suit you better.

Are the journeys suitable for families?

They can be. Tell us the ages of everyone travelling and we will adjust the pace, rooming and experiences accordingly. Children's pricing depends on ages and room arrangements and is confirmed in the proposal.
