Overview

A first journey through India, told through its people.

The standard Golden Triangle is a sightseeing checklist. This one follows a story, from the empire that built these cities, to the craftsmen who made its monuments, to the families who still live in its palaces. Every day pairs one landmark with one human encounter.

Pace: considered pacing, with landmarks and human encounters. Like all of our journeys it is private throughout, with your own car and chauffeur, private guides in each place and someone to call from the first day to the last.

Journey highlights

  • Humayun’s Tomb with a conservation specialist and a picnic in Sunder Nursery
  • Old Delhi’s Mughal food traditions and Sufi qawwali when the schedule allows

  • Marble inlay in Agra and hands-on block printing near Jaipur
  • Three nights at Taj Rambagh Palace and a family-hosted haveli cooking class

Itinerary

7 nights, stop by stop.

A designed route, not a fixed one. Each stop can be lengthened, shortened or swapped before we confirm your journey.

  1. Humayun’s Tomb in Delhi, red sandstone and white marble under a blue sky

    Days 1–2 · Delhi

    The Empire’s Layers

    Day 1: Arrival and Stillness

Private meet-and-greet at the aircraft door, subject to airport permissions and service availability, followed by a chauffeured transfer to The Imperial, the 1930s Art Deco grande dame on Janpath. Expect a quiet evening: afternoon tea beneath the palms, then dinner at the hotel. Nothing is scheduled, so jet lag gets the day it needs.

Day 2: Mughal Delhi, Then the Other Delhi

Morning at Humayun’s Tomb with a conservation specialist rather than a general guide. The restoration here was led by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, and hearing how it was done makes the garden tomb far more interesting. Then a private picnic in Sunder Nursery, the restored heritage park next door.

In the afternoon, a rickshaw and food journey through Old Delhi, tracing the Mughal kitchen through paratha lanes, kebab stalls and spice merchants, with a tasting guide setting the pace so nothing is rushed or random. End the evening at the Nizamuddin Dargah, where Sufi qawwali is traditionally sung on Thursday evenings. We plan around the performance schedule where possible and confirm it for your dates.

  2. The Taj Mahal framed by carved sandstone arches in warm morning light

    Days 3–4 · Agra

    Love and Craft

Day 3: The Road to Agra

Drive south on the Yamuna Expressway (about 3.5 to 4 hours) with a stop for a private breakfast en route. Check in to The Oberoi Amarvilas, whose Taj-facing rooms give you the monument from your own window. Late afternoon at Mehtab Bagh, the riverside garden directly opposite the Taj, for a sunset view across the water.

Day 4: First Light at the Taj

Enter at the opening for sunrise, when the marble shifts from grey to pink to white, accompanied by a guide who knows the quieter vantage points.

Return to the hotel for a long breakfast, then spend the afternoon at Agra Fort, the Mughal power seat, and the delicate Itimad-ud-Daulah tomb, often called the “Baby Taj.” Visit a family atelier of pietra dura marble inlay artisans, whose families have worked in this tradition for generations. Watch semi-precious stones cut and set by hand, a craft with a direct line to the Taj itself.

    Moments

    • Sunset across the Yamuna at Mehtab Bagh
    • First light at the Taj Mahal
    • Agra Fort and Itimad-ud-Daulah
    • Pietra dura marble inlay with a family of artisans

  3. The pink east facade of the Hawa Mahal in Jaipur

    Days 5–8 · Jaipur

    Living Royalty

Day 5: Along the Old Caravan Route to Jaipur

Drive west toward Rajasthan (about 5 hours with stops, depending on traffic and time at each site). Break the journey at Fatehpur Sikri, Akbar’s abandoned red sandstone capital, and at Chand Baori in Abhaneri, one of India’s deepest and most striking stepwells, with 3,500 symmetrical steps descending in geometric patterns. Arrive in Jaipur by evening and check in to Taj Rambagh Palace, former home of the Maharaja of Jaipur. Settle in with a drink at the Polo Bar.

Day 6: The Fort Before the Crowds

Reach Amber Fort early for the quiet hour before the tour buses. Walk or take a jeep up instead of riding an elephant. Continue to the Anokhi Museum of Hand Printing, a restored haveli devoted to the block-printing tradition, then to a working workshop in Sanganer or Bagru where you carve and stamp your own cloth under a master printer’s guidance.

Evening: a private sundowner on the ramparts of Nahargarh Fort, above the glowing city, subject to venue permissions and availability.

    Day 7: Royal Jaipur

Morning at the City Palace with a private tour, including selected royal residential sections where access is permitted and confirmed, then Jantar Mantar, the 18th-century observatory of giant astronomical instruments. Lunch at the palace’s courtyard restaurant, then an afternoon at Johari Bazaar with a gemstone specialist who can explain what to look for and what to avoid. A visit to the famed jewellers on MI Road is a good addition for those serious about stones.

For the evening, a private cooking class in a Rajasthani haveli, hosted by a member of the family who has revived the royal kitchen’s old recipes. You cook over an open fire, then eat what you’ve made.

    Day 8: Departure

A late, slow breakfast, then a final stroll through the Rambagh gardens. A short domestic flight (about an hour) or a private car back to Delhi for your international departure. We arrange the return around your onward flight, allowing time for the transfer and connection.

    Moments

    • Fatehpur Sikri and Chand Baori on the road to Jaipur
    • Amber Fort early, followed by block printing with a master printer
    • A private sundowner at Nahargarh Fort, subject to permission
    • City Palace, Jantar Mantar and Johari Bazaar
    • A private cooking class in a Rajasthani haveli

Planning this journey

A private Golden Triangle tour, with a clear focus.

For the service and design process, explore private India journeys. For accommodation choices and price considerations, see luxury travel in India.

Seven nights, three cities

The route concentrates on Delhi, Agra and Jaipur rather than adding a safari or a distant city. Two nights in Delhi, two in Agra and three in Jaipur allow time for landmarks and human encounters. Day eight returns to Delhi by domestic flight or private car, timed around your international departure.

A week in India is not a week away

Seven nights usually span eight local calendar days. Travellers arriving from the United States should count international travel separately and consider extra arrival time if rest is a priority. We plan the first guided day around the actual flight schedule.

Confirm the special arrangements

Aircraft-door assistance, conservation specialists, private picnics, royal residential access and the Nahargarh sundowner require confirmation for your dates. We also check monument opening days, museum schedules and qawwali timings before setting the day-by-day sequence.

Choose extensions deliberately

Ranthambore changes both the duration and the daily rhythm; Udaipur adds a separate city and transfer. Compare Classic Private India for a wildlife addition and Grand India for a broader route before combining everything into a short trip.

These are the properties we propose for this route, a few defining hero stays balanced with characterful, well-located supporting hotels. Questions

Before you enquire.

Can the special experiences be guaranteed?

Aircraft-door assistance, specialist hosts, royal residential access and private use of venues depend on permissions, schedules and availability. We confirm the arrangements and any alternatives in your proposal before you travel.

What is India’s Golden Triangle?

It is the Delhi–Agra–Jaipur route: Delhi’s historic and modern cityscapes, Agra’s Taj Mahal and fort, and Jaipur’s palaces, fort and craft traditions. Our sample returns to Delhi and is private throughout.

Is Ranthambore included in this Golden Triangle tour?

No. The Timeless Golden Triangle focuses on Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. Classic Private India adds Ranthambore to those cities in a ten-night itinerary. A customized wildlife extension needs extra nights and confirmed safari arrangements.

Is this a fixed departure?

No. Every journey is private and travels on your dates, with your own car, chauffeur and guides. The route on this page is a designed starting point; the stays, pacing and experiences are refined around you before anything is confirmed.

What does the from-price cover?

It is an indicative starting point per person, based on two travellers sharing a room in the stays listed, in the proposed accommodation and room categories, excluding international flights. Your proposal is priced against your dates, room categories and final inclusions.

When is the best time to travel?

Choose dates around the route and the experiences that matter to you. Northern city sightseeing, Kerala’s hills and waterways, and central India’s safari parks have different weather and operating calendars. Tell us your preferred dates; we will discuss the tradeoffs and confirm activity availability before finalizing the journey.

Can the hotels be changed?

Yes. The stays listed are the ones we propose for this route, subject to availability when we design your journey. We suggest alternatives of similar character where a property is full, or where a different one would suit you better.

Are the journeys suitable for families?

They can be. Tell us the ages of everyone travelling and we will adjust the pace, rooming and experiences accordingly. Children's pricing depends on ages and room arrangements and is confirmed in the proposal.
