The cost of a luxury private journey in India depends on the route, number of nights, rooms, travel dates and the service included. A hotel tariff or a daily car rate is only one part of that picture. For a traveller planning from the United States, the useful comparison is a complete itinerary with clear inclusions, comfortable pacing and a proposal in USD.

This guide explains how to read an indicative starting price and where additional costs can arise. Planning guidance was reviewed on 6 October 2026; arrangements for 2027 travel are quoted against the chosen dates and availability.

What does a private, tailor-made India journey include?

Private travel means travelling with your own party rather than joining a scheduled group. Tailor-made travel means refining the route, rooms, guiding and experiences around your interests. Our private India journeys combine both, with a personal proposal before arrangements are confirmed.

The proposed journey inclusions cover accommodation with breakfast, private road transport, local guiding, arrival assistance, the specified entrance fees and experiences, internal flights where the route requires them, and on-call support. Read the individual journey page and final proposal for the exact arrangements. A dedicated host travelling with you throughout is a separate option, rather than another name for ordinary concierge support.

Indicative prices for complete India journeys

The following examples are the public starting prices for existing Wellington & Grant journey ideas. They are in USD per person, based on two travellers sharing standard-category rooms, excluding international flights. They are indicative starting points, subject to dates, availability and final design, rather than confirmed 2027 hotel tariffs.

  • Classic Private India: ten nights through Delhi, Agra, Ranthambore and Jaipur, from USD 9,000 per person.
  • Signature Rajasthan: twelve nights through Delhi, Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur, from USD 10,750 per person.
  • Grand India: thirteen nights combining the northern icons with Udaipur and Varanasi, from USD 12,750 per person.

Two adults sharing one room should consider the total for both travellers, not treat the per-person figure as a couple’s price. Separate rooms, connecting rooms, suites and children’s arrangements require an individual proposal. Prices for festive periods are available on request.

Indicative cost breakdown: hotels, transport, meals and experiences

Indicative planning estimates: These are illustrative market costs, not confirmed 2027 tariffs or Wellington & Grant quotations. Amounts are in USD unless INR is stated; check whether each cost is per person, per night, per vehicle, per outing or for two travellers. Hotel examples relate to the dates described in the original research. Actual costs depend on travel dates, availability, room category, route, exchange rates and inclusions. Taxes, visa fees, entry fees and insurance costs must be confirmed with the relevant provider or official source. Festive journey pricing is available on request.

The daily tiers are approximate examples for two travellers, not fixed-price offers or exact sums of every range. They illustrate different styles of travel; a complete tailor-made journey has its own confirmed proposal. Avoid adding a component again when it is already included in a hotel, lodge or journey price.

1. Accommodation

TierTypical propertiesPer night (peak season)
BudgetIndependent guesthouses, city business hotels$40-120
Mid-rangeBoutique heritage havelis, 4-star chains$150-350
Palace / heritageRambagh Palace (Jaipur), Sawai Man Mahal, Oberoi/Taj/Leela flagships$375-1,500+ for entry rooms
Top suitesRoyal and Presidential suites, whole-wing buyouts$1,750-10,000+ (estimate)

Key Points:

  • Entry rooms at Rambagh Palace have been listed are roughly $900 a night ($1,180 with taxes) for a December date.
  • Sawai Man Mahal is around $377 a night ($445 with taxes) for a December date.
  • Narain Niwas Palace, a more dated heritage stay, is about $119 a night.
  • Luxury hotels in India add GST, which is 18% above a certain nightly rate. Budget a further 15–20% on top of the quoted rate.

2. Transport

OptionCostNotes
Private car + driver (AC sedan or SUV)$70-120/day (estimate)Includes fuel and driver's accommodation. Typical for Delhi-Agra-Jaipur-Udaipur circuits
Luxury vehicle (Innova Crysta, Mercedes/Audi)$150-300/day (estimate)Palace hotels can arrange this
Domestic flights$60-200 per person per sector (estimate)Delhi-Jaipur-Udaipur-Jodhpur; booking flexibility matters more than fare
Private jet charter$3,000-8,000+ per flight hour (estimate)Typically for groups or tight schedules
Helicopter transfers$200-4,000+ per transfer (estimate)Short hops to remote lodges or palace helipads, with variable availability

Most travelers combine modes: a driver for the Golden Triangle, one or two domestic flights to skip long road stretches, and a helicopter only for a specific arrival moment.

3. Guides

TypePer-day rate
Group tour guide (shared)$10-25 per person (estimate)
Licensed private guide, English$50-100 (estimate)
Specialist guide (art historian, architect, textile expert)$150-300+ (estimate)
Naturalist for safariUsually bundled into lodge or jeep cost, or $50-100/day extra

Insist on a government-certified (Ministry of Tourism) guide.

4. Dining

StylePer person
Local restaurants, street-food tours$5-20 (estimate)
Hotel restaurants, good mid-range dining$30-70 (estimate)
Fine dining (palace restaurants, Indian Accent-type tasting menus)$100-250+ (estimate)
Private chef experience (at a villa, heritage haveli, or a palace courtyard)$150-500 per person (estimate)
In-villa dining, butler-servedOften included in suite rates, or $80-200 per person

The cost driver is rarely the food itself. It is the setting: a candlelit dinner on a palace lawn or a private dining pavilion adds a premium of $100-300 per couple.

5. Experiences and Activities

Wildlife safaris. Ranthambore is the most accessible tiger reserve from Delhi and Jaipur, and Bandhavgarh in Madhya Pradesh is often considered better for sightings but takes more travel time.

  • Public jeep or canter seats are cheap but shared. Park permits are booked online and sell out weeks ahead.
  • A fully private jeep through a luxury hotel is far more expensive. Taj Sawai lists a private jeep seating up to six guests at INR 40,000 plus 18% tax, which is roughly $450-530 per outing.
  • Plan on 2-4 game drives to give tigers a fair chance. Budget $1,000-2,500 in total for a private-jeep safari block for two.

Spa and wellness. Palace spa treatments run $80-200 per session. Ayurvedic retreat programs at dedicated properties run $300-800 per person per night (estimate), usually all-inclusive.

Cultural experiences. Typical prices (estimates):

  • Private after-hours palace or fort access: $500-3,000+
  • Cooking class with a family: $30-80 per person
  • Block-printing or miniature-painting workshop: $40-100
  • Hot-air balloon over Jaipur: $200-350 per person
  • Vintage-car or elephant-free heritage drives: $150-400

6. Shopping and Incidentals

  • Visa: The 30-day e-tourist visa is $25 from July to March and $10 from April to June for many nationalities. A 3% bank charge is added, and one-year and five-year options exist (one-year commonly $40). Fees vary by passport, so check the official portal before paying.
  • Monument entry fees: Foreigner tickets are much higher than domestic ones. Taj Mahal is roughly $15-20, and Amber Fort, City Palace Jaipur and similar sites are $5–15 each. A full itinerary totals about $100-200 per person.
  • Tipping: Around 10% at restaurants if no service charge is added. Guides $10-20 a day, drivers $10-15 a day. Hotels: $2-5 per bag, and a pooled staff tip for longer stays.
  • Travel insurance: 4-8% of trip cost. Get a policy with medical evacuation and trip interruption cover.
  • Shopping: Highly variable. Jewelry, rugs, textiles and antiques can run into the thousands. Set a budget and buy through hotel-vetted stores.

7. Sample Daily Cost Tiers (for two)

$500 a day: Comfortable, well-planned

  • Boutique haveli or 4-star: $200-250
  • Car + driver: $80-100
  • Private guide: $60
  • Meals: $60-80
  • Entry fees and small activities: $40-60

$1,500 a day: Classic luxury

  • Palace room (e.g., Rambagh, Sawai Man Mahal, Oberoi): $600-900 plus tax
  • Car + driver, upgraded vehicle: $150
  • Private specialist guide: $100-150
  • Fine dining plus one private dinner: $250
  • Experiences (spa, private access, safari share): $200-300

$5,000+ a day: Ultra-luxury, no friction

  • Top palace suite or villa: $2,000-4,000+
  • Chauffeur-driven luxury fleet plus domestic flights or a helicopter transfer: $500-1,500 (averaged across the trip)
  • Private chef, butler and curated dining: $500-800
  • Private tiger-safari block, rare cultural access, wellness programs: $1,000-2,000
  • Dedicated trip host or concierge

What most people underestimate

  1. Taxes and service charges can add 15-25% to hotel and dining quotes.
  2. Peak-season palace rooms sell out months in advance, and the same room can cost 2-3x more over Christmas and New Year.
  3. Tiger sightings are never guaranteed, so budget for extra safari days rather than hoping for one.

What changes the price?

Accommodation and room categories

A historic palace, a modern palace-inspired resort and a smaller heritage property offer different experiences. The right choice depends on location, room comfort, atmosphere and how much time the itinerary leaves to enjoy the hotel. The Oberoi Udaivilas is palace-inspired rather than a converted historic royal residence.

A defining stay can be balanced with excellent supporting hotels. A suite, a particular view or extra rooms may change the cost substantially; the most expensive room need not be the right choice at every stop. Our Rajasthan heritage-stay guide explores the different kinds of properties.

Route length and transfers

More destinations mean more movements, not simply more sightseeing. Road transfers, flight sectors, arrival coordination and additional hotel nights all affect the design. Count international flight time separately from the nights spent in India, and consider rest after arrival before adding a distant extension.

Guiding, safaris and specialist experiences

Local guiding, a specialist encounter and a host accompanying the whole journey are different services. Safari proposals should specify the number of drives, permits, vehicle arrangements and included guiding. A preferred lodge does not guarantee a particular park zone, and wildlife sightings cannot be promised.

Private events, special dining, workshops and unusual access depend on permission and availability. We confirm the specific arrangement and price rather than attach an unverified fee to a promised experience.

Travel dates

Hotels and activities can have different availability and pricing across the year. Christmas, New Year and festival dates may involve minimum stays or additional arrangements. Festive pricing is available on request. An ordinary-season starting price should not be assumed to apply to those dates.

What should you budget for separately?

The advertised journey prices exclude international flights, visas, travel insurance, vaccinations, drinks, meals not listed and gratuities. Festive supplements are quoted individually. Shopping and personal spending are separate choices. Your final proposal should distinguish included entrance fees and experiences from optional additions.

Ask whether each amount is per person, per room, per vehicle, per outing or for the whole party, and whether applicable taxes are included. Do not apply one blanket tax percentage to every expense. Visa requirements and fees depend on the passport and application; use the official application source before paying. Insurance should be selected around your circumstances and itinerary rather than a generic percentage presented as a guaranteed premium.

How to compare two private India proposals

  • Compare the same travel dates, number of nights and party size.
  • Check named properties, room categories, occupancy and alternatives if a hotel is unavailable.
  • Separate driving days from full sightseeing days and check internal flight arrangements.
  • Check which guiding, meals, entrance fees and activities are actually included.
  • For wildlife, confirm the number of drives and the permit and vehicle arrangements.
  • Distinguish on-call assistance from a dedicated accompanying host.
  • Read exclusions and confirm the full proposal price before arrangements are made.

Questions about private India travel costs

Is a published hotel rate a reliable estimate for a complete journey?

No. It does not account for the full route, guiding, transfers, experiences, support and other inclusions. Compare complete proposals with the same assumptions rather than adding unverified daily figures together.

Can we change the hotels or reduce the number of destinations?

Yes. Share the stays and experiences that matter most. Fewer moves or a different hotel mix can change both the rhythm and cost, but the revised itinerary needs its own proposal.

Are international flights included?

No. The published from-prices exclude international flights to and from India. The journey proposal states any included internal flights and the remaining exclusions.

Is a luxury journey necessarily a palace stay every night?

No. Thoughtful design can combine a few defining properties with characterful supporting stays and time to enjoy both. Explore our approach to luxury India travel, then share your dates, party and priorities for a personal proposal.
