About Agra
Agra exists for one building, and it earns the reputation. The Taj Mahal is best met twice: at dusk from the gardens across the river, when the marble catches the last light, and again at sunrise inside its gates, before the crowds arrive. Agra Fort, the Mughal capital before Delhi, sits a short drive away with its own river-facing pavilions and the room where the emperor who built the Taj Mahal was later imprisoned, watching it from a distance.
Best time to visit: November to February for cool mornings at the Taj Mahal; the site is at its best in the first hour after sunrise, whatever the season.
Worth arranging
- Sunrise inside the Taj Mahal with a private guide
- Dusk across the river from the Mehtab Bagh gardens
- Agra Fort and its river-facing pavilions
