Chettinad

Merchant mansions and a distinctive kitchen

About Chettinad

Chettinad is a region of merchant houses whose long courtyards, carved timber and patterned floors reveal a history of trade and travel. A restored mansion stay lets the architecture become part of the day rather than a brief visit. Beyond the Usual spends two nights here, with home cooking, village walks and craft encounters; access to privately owned houses is arranged individually.

Best time to visit: November to February for cooler village walks and mansion visits. Plan outdoor time around the midday heat.

Worth arranging

  • Courtyard houses and their finely worked interiors
  • Chettinad cooking with a local host
  • Athangudi tiles and the region’s craft traditions
