Mahabalipuram

Pallava stonework beside the sea

About Mahabalipuram

Mahabalipuram, also known as Mamallapuram, brings together rock-cut sanctuaries, sculpted reliefs and the Shore Temple beside the Bay of Bengal. The monuments make more sense as a group, with a guide connecting their stories and the ambition of their Pallava builders. Beyond the Usual pairs the visit with a coastal night before continuing to Pondicherry.

Best time to visit: November to February for cooler sightseeing, allowing for coastal rain. Visit exposed monuments early in the day.

Worth arranging

  • The Shore Temple against the coastal sky
  • The great relief known as Arjuna’s Penance
  • The Five Rathas and the town’s continuing stone-carving craft
