Warm evening light on the sculpted tower of Brihadisvara Temple in Thanjavur

Thanjavur

The Chola world, still worked by hand

About Thanjavur

Thanjavur’s Brihadisvara Temple gives the Chola empire a monumental presence, but the city’s appeal continues in smaller rooms: bronze casting, painting and music traditions that still have practitioners. Beyond the Usual combines the great temple with encounters in working studios, arranged around the artisans’ availability. Two nights leave room to see the architecture and understand something of the skills behind it.

Best time to visit: November to February for more comfortable touring. Temple courtyards can be hot underfoot later in the day.

Worth arranging
