Pondicherry

French facades, Tamil courtyards and sea air

About Pondicherry

Pondicherry, officially Puducherry, is best understood on foot, moving between the French quarter’s pale facades and the Tamil quarter’s family houses and courtyards. Beyond the Usual gives it two nights, with heritage walks, time by the seafront and a cooking encounter that puts the region’s mixed influences on the table. The town is a pause between Chennai’s energy and the temple country farther south.

Best time to visit: November to February is cooler, with rain still possible during the northeast monsoon. Early mornings suit walking.

Worth arranging

  • The French and Tamil quarters with a heritage guide
  • A family cooking experience, arranged in advance
  • An early walk along the seafront promenade
