Thekkady

Spice forest, on the edge of a reserve

About Thekkady

Thekkady sits on the edge of the Periyar Tiger Reserve, in a landscape where cardamom, pepper and clove have been cultivated for centuries. A guided walk through a working spice plantation is one of the more sensory hours on any of our journeys, and a boat on Periyar's lake brings a chance, never a certainty, of wild elephant sightings from the water.

Best time to visit: October to March, avoiding Kerala's monsoon; the plantation walks and lake boats run year-round outside the heaviest rains.
