The forest of the Pench river

About Pench

Pench National Park straddles the river of the same name across the border of Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, its dense sal and teak forest thought to have inspired Rudyard Kipling's Jungle Book. It carries a healthy population of tigers and leopards alongside its wild dogs, or dholes, and is generally quieter and less visited than Kanha or Bandhavgarh, its neighbours to the north.

Best time to visit: November to April; like the other central Indian reserves, Pench closes for the monsoon from July to September.

Worth arranging
