About Munnar
Munnar sits high in the Western Ghats, where tea has been grown commercially since the nineteenth century and the hillsides remain covered in it as far as the eye can see. A working estate stay allows walks through the plantations themselves and a visit to see the leaf plucked and processed, in cool hill air that is a welcome contrast to the coastal heat below.
Best time to visit: September to March; Munnar's altitude keeps it noticeably cooler than the coast year-round, with the clearest views in the months just after the monsoon.
Worth arranging
- A walk through working tea gardens with an estate guide
- A visit to see tea plucked and processed, and to taste it fresh
- Cool hill mornings after the coastal heat
