Chinese fishing nets reflected in still water beneath rose-coloured sunset clouds in Kochi

Kochi

Layered history on one small peninsula

About Kochi

Kochi packs an unusual amount of history into the small peninsula of Fort Kochi: Chinese fishing nets brought by traders centuries ago, a Portuguese and Dutch colonial quarter, and one of India's oldest synagogue communities, all within walking distance of each other. It is the gentlest possible introduction to the pace of the south, and the usual arrival point for a Kerala journey.

Best time to visit: November to February, outside Kerala's monsoon and the more humid pre-monsoon months.

Worth arranging

  • Fort Kochi on foot: the fishing nets, old quarter and colonial streets
  • A classical Kathakali dance performance in the evening
  • One of India's oldest Jewish communities and its historic synagogue
