About Kanha
Kanha National Park's open grasslands and sal forest are widely credited as Kipling's other inspiration for The Jungle Book, and its most significant achievement is quieter than its tigers: Kanha's conservation programme brought the barasingha, the swamp deer, back from the edge of extinction. It is one of India's largest and best-managed tiger reserves, with a strong sighting record across its varied terrain.
Best time to visit: November to April; the park closes for the monsoon from July to September, and its grasslands are at their most open toward the end of the dry season.
Worth arranging
- Morning and afternoon safaris across Kanha's open grasslands
- The barasingha, saved here from near-extinction
- One of India's largest and best-managed tiger reserves
